Turnipseed Campground is one our favorite spots for car camping in Alabama. It’s also a great base camp for doing some awesome day hikes in the area.
The Chinnabee Silent Trail cuts right through the campground and meets with the Pinhoti Trail when heading south two miles into the Cheaha Wilderness.
Heading north on the Chinnabee Silent Trail you come to Cheaha Falls in just a mile. If you continue past the falls briefly uphill on the Chinnabee you will come to the Cheaha Shelter. There is a picnic table and fire ring there with some breathtaking vistas of the of the surrounding mountains. This in itself makes a nice two mile out and back hike.
If you decide that you want to take a longer hike, you can continue on the Chinnabee Silent Trail to Lake Chinnabee where there is a recreation area. The hike out and back is a little under eight miles and we rate as easy to moderate.
